                                Baltimore & Howard County (West Friendship)-NOV.14th 2009 ~Debating

RICHMOND RBA (OPEN) (AYLETT)- December 5th

I am only 17 years old and plan to become vet when I get out of high school and go to college. I have been breeding and raising rabbits for 4 years. I started out like most breeders with just a few mix breeds. I then got into Holland lop's and mini lops. I now breed Holland, Mini, And English lop's the other breed I raise is Netherland dwarfs. In the 4 years I have been raising rabbits I have redone my rabbitry. Brought in a lot of new rabbits and breeds learned more about rabbit diseases and even taken on the task of rehomeing a few rabbits that people could no longer keep and found them new homes. I've learned to take on one day at a time and not to give up when you are faced with a problem. The one thing I must add is that I have talked to a lot of nice people and if it weren't for raising rabbits I would have never knew that there were such great people out there that are always willing to help you when you need it.

I only breed my rabbits first and for most to improve the rabbits that I have with what I have taken in and learned. I like to take the time to get to know each bunny that is born at my rabbitry which is a key part of what I do.  All of my rabbits have names and yes I do know them all. My rabbitry is outdoors I do this as a hobby but look at it as my life I spend many many hours outside with the rabbits feeding, caring, and grooming.  All the money I get from them goes right back into them for feed, water bottles, hay, Vet care and so on. I do care if there is a problem with my rabbits and if a person ever gets one from me. I do the best that I can to help if they ever have a problem.  There are not many vets that know much if anything about rabbits so its hard to find a good vet for your bunny. I have learned what I know from doing a lot of research and talking to other people with this Hobby :)

My rabbits are all treated for coccidea and are wormed.
I do not breed my rabbits if they show a sign of any type of illness.

Disease That Rabbits Can Get

PASTEURELLA [SNUFFLES

Many breeders believe that all rabbits carry the Pasteurella multocidia organism in their respiratory tract. This is not true! Though some may indeed carry the infection, there are many which do not. {This is why I breed toward disease resistance. If any rabbit shows signs of infection they are culled] Pasturella manifests itself in many forms. The most common is what is referred to as snuffles. This is a purulent discharge from the nose. Should you see matting on the inside front paws you can most assuredly blame Pasteurella.

Symptoms

The first signs of the disease are sneezing and discharge from the nose and or eyes. Not every sneeze is indicative of the presents of Pasteurella. A rabbit may sneeze when it gets water up it's nose while drinking, or it may have an allergy to something in the area. Hay dust, colognes etc. These sneezes will have a clear watery discharge or none at all. If there is persistant sneezing with matting of the inside of the front paws and a colored discharge from the nose or eyes it is safe to assume the rabbit has a Pasteurella infection.. This is an extremely contagious disease for which there is NO CURE! There are treatments which will mask the symptoms but the rabbit remains contagious. Any rabbit which you treat places your whole herd at risk of infection. The Pasteurella germ can be carried on your clothing and person. It is of extreme importance that you change your clothes and wash theroughly before going near any other rabbits. Isolate any sick rabbit immediately and care for the herd first and the isolated animal last. Disinfect it's cage and any other equipment the rabbit came in contact with.

TREATMENTS

Rabbits can be treated with a number of antibiotics but to this point none have been successful in bringing about a cure. The best treatment for Pasteurella is prevention. Through A.R.B.A. [American Rabbit Breeders Association] they are trying to develop a cure for snuffles, but it is still a long way off. For now, strict sanitation, good ventilation and culling will go a long way in helping to prevent the spread of this dreaded disease.

PREVENTION

Ventilation is important in snuffles control since both humidity an ammonia are involved in the spread and growth of this condition. Ammonia is present in rabbit urine, having it build up in the atmosphere has a bad effect on both humans and rabbits. If you can smell it while walking through your rabbitry, think how it is effecting your rabbits. By removing the urine and feces from the rabbitry you are decreasing the amount of ammonia in the surrounding area.

COCCIDIOSIS

There are two types of Coccidiosis Intestinal and Live Form. The disease is caused by a protozoan parasite which attacks the bile duct or the intestinal tract. There are ten different species of the genus Eimeria which may infect the intestine. Generally these are not of much concern, unless a case of enteritis makes an apperance. This can lead to enterotoxemia and or Mucoid enteropathy, although enterotoxemia has been reported in rabbits which are free of Coccidiosis. Liver
Coccidiosis is a problem as it causes white spots on the liver which renders the rabbit uneatable.

SYMPTOMS

Include lack of apetite, rough coat, loss of weight, poor weight gain, potbelly, listlessness and diarrhea. All of which often lead to death.

TREATMENT

The best treatment is the use of sulfaquinoxyline in the drinking water as the only available water for 5 days on, 5 days off then 5 days on again.. [one teaspoon per gallon of water] Repeat the treatment in 30 days to get any hatchlings. DO NOT use the treated rabbit[s] as a food source for at least 30 days after the last treatment.

PREVENTION

Brush the cling-ons from the cage floor within 24 hours. This will aid greatly in preventing the spread of Coccidiosis. Do not allow fecal contamination of the feed or water.

EAR MITES

Are caused by the parasite Psoroptes Cuniculi which is a mite that likes to make it's home in the rabbit's ear canal. They irritate the rabbit to the point that the scratching can lead to infection.

SYMPTOMS

Shaking of the head, scratching the ears, and a brown waxy crusty substance will appear after awhile if not attended to.

TREATMENT

Place a few drops of any type of oil in the ears and massage the base of the ear gently to work the oil in. The oil will drown the mites. Treat one to three times a day for three days. repeat in ten days to get hatchlings.

FUR-MITES

Will look like flakes of dandruff. It is caused by: Chyletiella Parasitivorax and Listrophorus Gibbus. They occur most commomly on the back of the neck. An over-population may cause Dermatitis.

SYMPTOMS

An unthrifty coat, loss of fur around the face , neck and back.

TREATMENT

A good Cat flea powder, Listerine mouthwash rubbed into the infected area will make short order of the Mites. You can also use a droplet the size of a small green-pea of Ivermectine/Zimectrine Horse Paste Wormer. Repeat treatment in ten days. Do NOT use treated animal as a meat source for at least 30 days after last treatment.

What do you think of my website?
The best on the web
great
pretty good
not bad
just ok

How do I get rabbits that have never been sociallized to come up to me. Well I do not force them to like me I have many rescue bunnies that absolutly do not like people. But the way that I learned to gain the trust of a bunny is to feed them sweets. I use yogurt drops you can get them from your local pet shop. As you can see they are a hit with many of the bunnies and they will eat them right from my hand.

INFORMATION ABOUT RABBIT HEALTH, HUSBANDRY & DISEASES

Reproduction
  • Sexual maturity: 16 - 24 weeks
  • Gestion period 28 - 33 days
  • Litter size may very depending on breed 4 -12 kits may be born
  • Weaning age 7- 8 week's

  • SEXUAL MATURITY

Behaviour may change when a rabbit becomes sexualy mature. A doe may become aggressive, Particulary if she lives with another rabbit. She may mount or fight with another rabbit, or start circling and spraying like a buck. She may begin digging or nesting.

Small breeds such as the Miniature Lop mature at 3 1/2 months, Whereas larger breeds like the Flemish Giant mature later, Between 5 - 7 months. On average , Sexual maturity occurs when the rabbit reaches 80% of its body weight.

In buck rabbits the testicles generally descend at around 14 weeks of age.
After this time they will exhibit mounting behaviour, circling and spraying. Puberty in the buck occurs between 4 & 5 months of age; however, Optimum sperm production and reserves are not achieved until 6 - 7 months.

NEUTERING RABBITS
Reasons For doing so.

The Doe
  • By the age of 5 years up to 50% ( some studies suggest 95%) of does have a chance of uterine adenocarcinoma.
  • Uterine infection (pyometra) are common in does over 1 year of age.
  • Spaying removes all the behavioural problems associated with sexual , maturity such as nesting, mounting, aggression and mood swings.
  • Neutered does can live in company of bucks (preferably also neutered).

The Bucks
  • Castration eliminates the behaviour changes associated with sexual maturity such as Mounting, Spraying & Aggression.
  • Neutered bucks are easier to house-train, and smell less (essential if a house rabbit)
  • Prevents unwanted litters.

When to have the operation
  • The ideal timing for surgery is as the rabbit reaches sexual maturity. Bucks can be castrated as soon as the testicles descend (around 3-4 months of age). Does can be spayed at 6 months. Some smaller breeds may mature earlier; miniature does may be capable of breeding at 4 months, and may require neutering at this time.

Good Calcium Sources
  • Chinese cabbage
  • watercress
  • Kale
  • Dandelions
  • Parsley
  • Spinach

Moderate Calcium Sources
  • Cabbage
  • Strawberries
  • Radish and radish tops

Poor Calcium Sources
  • Carrots*
  • Cauliflower
  • Celery
  • Cucumber
  • Lettuce
  • Tomato*
  • Bananas*
  • Brussels Sprouts
  • Apples

Those marked with an asterisk should not be fed to rabbits with renal dysfunction due to their high phosphorus content.

What to expect when you get into raiseing rabbits

  • Rabbits are not cheap animals to care for & you will never ever make all the money back that you put into them. The one thing that makes me mad is when a breeder says well I put this much into the parents so I want the money back out of its babies. I have spent $100 & up on some of my English lop does but I ask only $65 for the babies sometimes I will even go as cheap as $20 to $30 no I am not makeing the money back out of one baby that I spent on the parent but when you have 10 plus babies in a litter & you are asking $20 or $30 that adds up. And it makes it affordable for the customer and will help you move your rabbits faster.

  • I am close to being one of the biggest rabbitries in my area. And I am hearing breeders with small amounts of rabbits such as 20 to 30 complain about the cost of feed and how much they use. How they have to up the price on their rabbits just because feed is so much these days. I go through about 10 plus bags a month at $11.50 to $13.90 per bag. Plus hay & straw which is around $5 for straw to $7.50 for hay which is for bedding, Nesting & eatting. I will not make my rabbits produce during extremely hot or cold months. Just to have babies to sell to make money for feed.

  • I have added up over the years what I have invested in the rabbits alone.      about $5,000 plus just in breeding stock, Last time we totaled up I had over $10,000  invested just in cages & supplies and that was 2 years ago.  That does not include vet bills , Medications, Paying people to come in and care for the rabbits when we want to go on vacation.  The up keep on cages such as buying new wire & wood to replace bottoms in the cages. New water bottles which can range from $3 to $6 depending on what kind you get.
